'Hatley Scoops Thornbury 2' wins the Grey Bruce Youth Soccer League in Blue Mountain

Hatley sponsored a youth soccer team this summer in Blue Mountain, ON. We were proud to have our logo displayed on the shirts of a mixed “under 10″
soccer team in the Grey Bruce Youth Soccer League. The team’s name was Thornbury 2, coached by Tom Christensen. Tom, an operating room nurse by day, has been coaching for 10 years.

We all know winning isn’t everything, but we are proud to say the ‘Hatley Scoops Thornbury 2′ soccer team won the championship! Great job, guys!

Kids’ Day Celebration

by Tory, posted October 11, 2011

Burlington joined more than 20 other cities across the United States to celebrate our amazing children with a Kids’ Day event. This community-based celebration is Vermont’s largest children’s festival and has been in existence for 26 years. The festival is open to all young people and the activities are accessible to everyone. Admission is only $1.

This was Hatley’s first year participating and we had a T-shirt painting booth. Reportedly, 1800 kids came through the gates of kid’s day this year, most of whom painted a t-shirt at the Hatley table. We had 6 stations set up with every kind of paint colour imaginable, and the kids could paint whatever they wanted, including our adorable Hatley animals (Bear, Moose, and Beaver). Needless to say, it was a very popular activity and the kids had a blast. The painted t-shirts then became a “coupon” offering 10% off when you come into our Burlington store location with your child wearing the painted tee.

Kids’ Day does not only celebrate and encourage our youth but it also brings a community together. Hopefully this event will continue to spread to other communities as it is a fun, affordable, outdoor family activity which Hatley is sure to be a part of in the future.

After the launch of the new Fall 2011 tween rain gear that saw the collection flying off the shelves, Hatley has added several new colors and prints for Fall 2012. The coats and coordinating boots are fashionable yet practical, perfect for the crucial back to school market.

Keeping in line with their environmental philosophy, Hatley raincoats are PVC free and lined with soft terry cloth for added comfort and warmth.

What’s on your skin?

by Tory, posted August 18, 2011

Here at Hatley we are environmentally conscientious and try our best to put forth a product that is as natural as possible while still being as cute as possible.  After all, our skin is our largest organ and our children are precious; so as a parent and a consumer we should buy responsibly and be aware of what material rests against our Children’s skin.  Hatley’s Children’s clothing is 100% cotton, PVC free and made with AZO free dyes.

If you have ever bought an article of clothing in which the colour ‘leaks’ onto your skin you should get rid of it as that dye is seeping into your skin.  If it is a favourite piece of clothing what you can do is soak it in vinegar (jeans for example would take 10 litres of water to 2 cups of regular vinegar, soak and rinse until the water runs clear and sets).  Colour discharge is not something you will see with any of Hatley’s clothing as we do numerous tests on all products to ensure your safety and satisfaction.

What is your favourite colour?

Bananas for Bananas

by Tory, posted July 20, 2011

Once upon a time it was an apple a day keeps the doctor away. But what about a banana a day keeps the mosquitoes away? Bananas are proving to have many medicinal benefits, including bug repellent.

So does a banana a day keep the skeeters away? Well, there is no scientific proof but people whose diet includes a banana a day seem to get less bug bites than those whose diets do not. Some people even rub a banana peel on an existing mosquito bite to help ease the itch. If this isn’t reason enough to incorporate, ‘nannas’ (as my three year old daughter calls them) into your diet, then what about aiding in digestion, lowering high blood pressure, bone and kidney health, and stress relief?

Listen up pregnant ladies looking for natural remedies, bananas are not only a great snack to boost energy but they can aid in morning sickness, as they help to keep your blood sugar levels up. Bananas also neutralize your stomach acid which can provide heartburn relief.

If all these reasons listed above are not enough to have you go bananas for bananas, they are a portable snack that tastes great and can even help improve your mood. So start feeding your little monkeys bananas! They will thank you later.

Sunscreen

by Tory, posted July 8, 2011

Summer is upon us, and with the heat and sunshine come UV rays, and therefore sunscreen. And lots of it, especially for our little ones. As we now know, the more sunburns one has before the age of 18 (some say 16) increases one’s chances for developing skin cancer.

My daughter is blond and has such fair skin that I constantly worry about her getting too much sun. She always wears a hat and sunscreen and we try to keep her out of the sun during mid day when rays are at their strongest. With this being said, I love summer and I love the sun, and who doesn’t love a sun kissed glow?

Problem with that is children learn by imitation, so basking in the sun is no longer part of my summer. When we go outside to play, it is my daughter who reminds me “mommy, don’t forget the sunscreen”! Luckily, it is all she knows. So next time you take the kids outside to play or to the pool when you are slathering them with sunscreen don’t forget to apply it to yourself as well.
